Federal Maritime Minister Unveils Vision for Maritime Development, Logistics Infrastructure, and Climate Resilience in Sindh
In a decisive step toward modernizing Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure and promoting climate-resilient urban development, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry outlined a robust vision for infrastructure expansion and blue economy advancement during a high-level meeting with Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Sindh on Public-Private Partnership.
Held at the Sindh Investment Department, the meeting focused on a range of strategic development initiatives intended to improve connectivity, logistics management, and resource sustainability around Karachi’s port infrastructure.
Among the top priorities was the proposal for a 15-kilometer elevated road connecting Karachi Port Trust (KPT) to Mai Kolachi. The project aims to ease congestion, curb encroachments, and preserve mangrove forests, a critical component of Karachi’s coastal environment. Minister Chaudhry noted, “Efficient connectivity between ports and urban infrastructure is vital for economic growth, environmental sustainability, and public convenience.”
Another major project discussed was the establishment of a Truck Logistics Park near the Malir Expressway, spanning over 300 acres. The park’s location offers direct access to city centers, port terminals, and the M-9 Motorway, aiming to streamline heavy vehicle traffic and support organized freight movement. Minister Chaudhry stressed the importance of future-ready planning, calling for infrastructure that can serve freight and logistics needs over the next 25 years.
In a move to tackle Karachi’s water scarcity, the installation of desalination plants at KPT was also highlighted. These plants would help meet the freshwater needs of both industrial and residential sectors, enhancing resilience in port-adjacent communities.
The meeting also explored long-term strategies for developing the blue economy, emphasizing the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, employment, and environmental protection. Both leaders agreed on expanding public-private partnerships, encouraging private investment, and integrating climate-conscious policies into maritime planning.
The session concluded with a joint commitment from federal and provincial representatives to accelerate project execution, ensure transparency, and maintain close coordination across all levels of government.
This collaborative initiative reflects the government’s broader ambition to build a modern, resilient, and green maritime economy aligned with national development goals. – ENGINEERING REVIEW
