Japanese technology investor SoftBank Group has raised $11.1 billion through dollar- and euro-denominated bond offerings, in what is expected to be the largest high-yield bond sale by an Asia-Pacific issuer, as the company seeks financing for its substantial investment in OpenAI.
The bond issuance adds to a 1 trillion yen ($6.3 billion) bond sale targeting retail investors earlier this month, increasing scrutiny of SoftBank’s financial position as it expands its investments in artificial intelligence.
Analysts and investors are likely to monitor the company’s financial exposure closely, particularly if market sentiment toward OpenAI and other AI companies deteriorates.
SoftBank has committed approximately $64.6 billion to OpenAI, alongside billions of dollars in related AI infrastructure projects. The investment forms part of founder and CEO Masayoshi Son’s strategy to establish the Japanese conglomerate as a major investor in the artificial intelligence industry.
The latest financing highlights SoftBank’s efforts to secure long-term funding for its AI expansion while managing the financial risks associated with its substantial investment commitments. – Reuters/ERMD
