Pakistani robotics data company World Context has held its first robotics hackathon at the University of California, Berkeley, bringing together 13 teams to develop projects using robotics datasets and explore opportunities for technology collaboration between Pakistan and the United States.
The event was organised in partnership with Blockchain at Berkeley and sponsored by Google Gemini, ElevenLabs, The Hackathon Company, Lovable, Praxis Robotics and UC Berkeley Startup. Participants worked with datasets provided by World Context across three categories: hardware, software and visualization.
Sortbot, a project focused on developing robots capable of sorting different types of objects, won the hardware category. Reconstructors won the software category for its work on bringing World Context data into the physical world. The team also won the visualization category with a simulation based on its project.
The hackathon offered a total of $4,500 in cash prizes and highlighted the growing role of human demonstration data in robotics. Such data is collected by recording how people perform tasks in real-world environments, providing developers with examples that can be used to train robotic systems to carry out physical tasks.
World Context Founder and CEO Sherdil Ali Khan said the quality and creativity of the projects exceeded expectations. He said the company plans to collaborate with universities on similar events in the future.
Khan said the Berkeley event demonstrated the advanced nature of the US robotics ecosystem while also highlighting opportunities for Pakistani technology companies and institutions to learn from international partners. He added that the company hopes to bring those lessons back to Pakistan and contribute to the country’s technology development.
The projects also demonstrated potential applications for World Context’s datasets, with participants finding new ways to use the information that the company had not initially anticipated. – ERMD
