Professor Noman Ahmed was appointed Acting Vice Chancellor of NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, on March 21, 2025, by the Government of Sindh.
NED University is one of the oldest universities in Pakistan. It was originally founded as the Prince of Wales Engineering College in 1921. Later, it was renamed NED Engineering College due to a substantial philanthropic contribution by the family members of Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw, a Zoroastrian businessman, during the 1920s. In 1977, it was upgraded to a full-fledged university. The university has three campuses in Karachi and a constituent college in Mithi, Tharparkar, Sindh.
Professor Noman Ahmed is an architect and planner by profession. He has taught at leading architecture and planning institutions in Karachi and has supervised postgraduate research in these disciplines. From 1989 to 2000, Dr. Ahmed served as a Faculty Member and Coordinator of the Urban Design Graduate Program at Dawood College of Engineering and Technology, Karachi. In 2000, he established the Architecture and Planning Department at NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi. He is currently a Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Sciences at NED University.
Dr. Ahmed has been regularly contributing articles on developmental issues to Pakistan’s leading newspapers, including Dawn, The News, The Friday Times, and other publications since 1988. He has also been professionally involved in numerous urban and regional planning projects in Karachi, Quetta, and various cities in Sindh, as well as other locations across Pakistan. Additionally, he has authored several research papers and books on urban and regional planning, urban infrastructure, and the developmental challenges faced by underprivileged communities in urban areas.
He currently serves as the Chair Holder and Network Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Urban Regions at NED University, Karachi.
Dr. Ahmed earned a Ph.D. in Civil and Building Engineering from Loughborough University in 2005. – ER
