Pakistan’s renewable energy sector continues to show steady progress, with notable growth in net metering generation over the past year. According to data released by Arif Habib Limited (AHL) Research, net metering units—excluding K-Electric consumers—rose sharply from 70.35 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in September 2024 to 142.67 GWh by September 2025, reflecting an increase of more than 100%.
On a month-on-month basis, generation through net metering grew by 28.1%, up from 111.4 GWh recorded in August 2025, the report noted.
The contribution of net metering to Pakistan’s total electricity generation has also strengthened over the past year. From a modest 0.6% share in September 2024, net metering’s contribution climbed to 1.1% by September 2025.
“Net metering’s share in total generation rose by 57 basis points year-on-year in September 2025, reflecting increased solar adoption and reduced grid dependence,” AHL Research stated.
Industry experts view this trend as a positive indicator of growing consumer participation in renewable energy, driven by rising solar installations and supportive regulatory frameworks. However, they also highlight the need for grid modernization and policy consistency to sustain momentum in the distributed energy segment. –ERMD
