INTERBATIONAL COLLABORATION
Mehran University of Engineering & Technology (MUET) proudly announces the successful completion of the PhD degree of Mr. Yahya S. Junejo in 5G Telecommunication Engineering, marking a significant milestone in advancing academic excellence through international collaboration.
Mr. Junejo’s doctoral research was conducted under a prestigious joint supervision arrangement between MUET, Pakistan and Lakehead University, Canada. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2022 under the National Centre for Robotics and Automation (NCRA) initiative, enabled access to advanced research infrastructure, including state-of-the-art 5G laboratory facilities. Such partnerships reflect the growing importance of global academic linkages in addressing complex engineering challenges.
His PhD thesis, titled “Improving Handover Management in High-Speed Rail Communications,” addresses a critical issue in modern telecommunication systems—ensuring seamless connectivity in high-speed mobility environments. The research contributes valuable insights toward enhancing the reliability and efficiency of next-generation wireless communication systems, particularly in the context of smart transportation and high-speed rail networks.
This achievement underscores the vital role of international research collaboration in strengthening institutional capacity, fostering innovation, and producing globally relevant solutions. The work was supported by multiple funding bodies, including the ICTEF4SD, Mitacs Globalink, Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) funding, and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
The research was supervised by Prof. Dr. Faisal Karim Shaikh, Chairman, Telecommunication Engineering Department, MUET, and co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry (SI), Distinguished National Professor, MUET, in collaboration with Dr. Waleed Aijaz, Head of the Wireless Communication & Networks (WCN) Research Group at Lakehead University. This collaborative supervision provided access to advanced facilities and expertise, further strengthening research outcomes.
This success story highlights that academic excellence combined with strong international collaboration is the need of the hour for developing innovative, high-impact solutions and positioning Pakistani institutions at the forefront of global research and technological advancement. – PR
