OBITUARY
The engineering community in Pakistan is mourning the passing of renowned engineer and community leader Imtiaz Hussain Shah, who died in Lahore today after battling blood cancer.
A distinguished engineering luminary and tireless advocate for engineers’ rights, Engr. Shah had fought and overcome the disease six years ago, but it returned recently. Colleagues and comrades, shocked by his sudden demise despite signs of improving health during treatment, described his passing as an irreparable loss to the profession.
Originally hailing from Multan, Engr. Shah was a graduate of University of Engineering and Technology Taxila and headed a consulting firm based in Lahore. He is survived by his widow and two sons.
Engr. Shah was one of the most prominent voices of Pakistan’s engineering fraternity. He served as president of the Pakistan Engineers Forum, one of the country’s leading groups representing engineers, and was elected three times as a council member of the Pakistan Engineering Council. In the 2024 PEC Governing Body elections, he contested for the office of Senior Vice Chairman.
Throughout his long professional career spanning nearly four decades, he remained a steadfast supporter of the engineering community, advocating improved professional standards, stronger institutional autonomy for PEC, employment opportunities for young engineers, and reforms in licensing and professional development. He was also associated with the Institution of Engineers Pakistan and the Association of Consulting Engineers Pakistan.
A longtime activist for engineers’ causes, Engr. Shah was widely respected for his integrity, humility and commitment to public service.
Announcing his demise, a message posted on his Facebook account said: “With deep grief and sorrow we report the returning of Engr. Imtiaz Hussain Shah to Allah SWT today morning. He was a frontline activist of engineers’ cause in Pakistan, a thorough gentleman and a beloved father.”
His funeral prayers (Namaz-e-Janaza) was offered after Maghrib prayers at the main mosque of NFC Phase-I Society, Lahore.
With his passing, Pakistan’s engineering community has lost a committed professional, principled leader and a powerful voice for generations of engineers. – ER
