Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired the first meeting of the Steering Committee on “Power Sector Regulatory Regime – Improvement & Reforms,” formed by the Prime Minister to strengthen regulation and promote efficiency, investment and competition in the power sector.
The committee reviewed the existing regulatory framework and discussed measures to create a clear, predictable and consistent environment for private-sector participation and long-term investment. Members also stressed the need to align Pakistan’s regulatory and policy framework with international best practices while taking local institutional and market conditions into account.
Aurangzeb emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among ministries, regulators and other institutions to address policy and regulatory challenges. He called for a practical, time-bound reform process and a comprehensive roadmap with clear timelines and responsibilities to deliver measurable improvements in sector performance and investment.
The committee also reviewed the role of the Technical Working Group, which will conduct detailed analysis and prepare proposals for consideration by the Steering Committee. It stressed the importance of engaging investors and other stakeholders to gather feedback on regulatory issues.
The Technical Working Group will submit focused recommendations to the Steering Committee, which will oversee their approval and implementation and issue necessary policy directions to relevant ministries and agencies. – ERMD
