Kaspersky finds higher malware infection rate among macOS users -

A Kaspersky survey has found that 12 percent of macOS users reported experiencing malware infections, compared with 9 percent of Windows users, highlighting differences in cybersecurity practices between the two groups.

According to the Russian cybersecurity company’s latest findings, Windows users were more likely to follow basic online safety measures. About 62 percent said they avoided opening suspicious emails or links, compared with 51 percent of macOS users.

The gap was also evident in the use of cybersecurity software. Around 42 percent of Windows users reported using digital protection software, while the figure for macOS users stood at 35 percent, a level Kaspersky described as concerning.

Security experts said strong anti-malware and anti-phishing protection is important for users of both operating systems as cyber threats continue to target internet-connected devices.

Windows users also reported adopting safer practices for protecting credentials and passwords at higher rates than macOS users. Kaspersky recommended password managers as one way to strengthen account security by storing credentials in an encrypted vault protected by a master password.

Modern password managers can also support authentication methods such as passkeys, allowing users to sign in across multiple devices through secure synchronisation without having to remember numerous passwords.

Kaspersky cybersecurity expert Sergey Puzan said cybersecurity protection should not depend on the type of device or operating system being used.

He stressed that any internet-connected device can face a range of cyber threats and therefore requires appropriate security measures. – ERMD
