Pakistan has recorded a significant improvement in the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) ICT Development Index (IDI) 2026, reflecting progress in the country’s digital connectivity and telecommunications sector.
According to the latest ITU data, Pakistan’s ICT Development Index score rose from 56.4 in 2025 to 67.7 in 2026, representing a 20% improvement. The country also improved its derived ranking by 27 places, while its connectivity pillar score increased by 22.8 points. Pakistan achieved a Meaningful Connectivity score of 79.
The ICT Development Index, revised in 2023, measures countries’ digital development based on two key pillars: Universal Connectivity, which assesses the availability of digital infrastructure, and Meaningful Connectivity, which evaluates the quality, affordability, reliability and inclusiveness of internet access, including device ownership and data usage.
Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the improved ranking reflects the government’s continued focus on expanding digital infrastructure and promoting the IT and telecom sectors under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision for a digitally enabled Pakistan.
She said stronger ICT indicators contribute to greater opportunities in education, employment, freelancing, entrepreneurship, business activity and digital public services, particularly for the country’s youth.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding affordable and reliable connectivity, improving service quality, promoting digital inclusion and encouraging investment in the IT and telecommunications sectors.
She added that Pakistan’s improved standing in the ITU index strengthens the country’s appeal for investors, technology companies and development partners while supporting its transition towards a more inclusive digital economy.-ERMD
