
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Altaf Mukati has been appointed President of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) University, succeeding Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali.
According to SZABIST, the appointment was made by the Chancellor in consultation with the Board of Governors in accordance with the SZABIST University Act, 2023. Dr. Mukati had been serving as Vice President (Academics) and Dean of Computing and Engineering Sciences, where he was closely involved in academic affairs, including the development and management of computing and engineering programmes.
With more than four decades of experience in technology, research, higher education and academic leadership, Dr. Mukati has been associated with SZABIST for many years. During his tenure as Vice President (Academics), he played a key role in academic planning and the expansion of the university’s programmes. SZABIST’s academic material shows that the university’s offerings include Mechatronic Engineering and programmes in computing and other disciplines, with programmes subject to accreditation by relevant regulatory bodies including the Pakistan Engineering Council and NCEAC.
Academic and professional career
Dr. Mukati is a computer and electronics engineer. He completed his B.E. in Electronics Engineering from NED University of Engineering and Technology and his M.S. in Computer Engineering from Boston University, USA. He subsequently completed his PhD from Hamdard University, Karachi. SZABIST lists his PhD as being in Computer Engineering, with his doctoral studies involving Boston University and Hamdard University.
Before joining SZABIST, Dr. Mukati spent around 17 years at Pakistan’s National Space Agency, SUPARCO, from 1983 to 2000. He later served at Hamdard University for eight years, including as Head of the Computer Systems Engineering Department. From 2008 to 2013, he served as Dean of Engineering at Bahria University.
His association with SZABIST has included senior academic leadership, particularly in computing and engineering. The university’s researcher profile identifies him as Vice President (Academics) and Dean of Computing and Engineering Sciences and records his involvement in academic and research activities as well as national-level professional bodies.
Dr. Mukati has also been recognized for his contribution to engineering education. He received the HEC Best University Teacher Award in 2010. In 2022, the Pakistan Engineering Council honored him with a Gold Medal and Lifetime Achievement/Excellence Award at Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad.
He has taught thousands of students at leading Pakistani universities and has authored books and research papers. SZABIST’s latest announcement says he has taught more than 10,000 students and authored four books along with numerous research papers. One of his books, published by HEC, received a Gold Medal from South Asia Publications.
Dr. Mukati has also served as a member or expert on several national and international academic and professional committees, including the Pakistan Engineering Council. He is a Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Engineering.
His appointment comes as SZABIST moves into a new phase following the completion of Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali’s tenure. As President, Dr. Mukati will now lead the university’s overall academic and institutional affairs, bringing to the position extensive experience in engineering, technology, research and higher education administration. – ER Report
