Provinces Finalize Wheat Policy Implementation, Private Sector to Procure Strategic Reserves

The meeting was chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, who reviewed progress on the implementation of the policy across provinces and regions.

During the meeting, provinces shared details of their existing wheat stocks along with their respective disposal plans. It was also confirmed that Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan will engage private sector companies for the procurement of wheat strategic reserves, marking a shift toward greater private-sector participation in the wheat market.

The committee was informed that all provinces and regions have successfully established Provincial Implementation Units to ensure coordinated and effective execution of the Interim National Wheat Policy nationwide.

Addressing the meeting, the Federal Minister said the core objective of the National Wheat Policy is to stabilize wheat prices for farmers and shield them from market uncertainty. He emphasized that the policy has been designed to ensure food security while maintaining price stability, adding that its full implementation would not place any undue burden on consumers.

Rana Tanveer Hussain further stated that the policy promotes transparency, strengthens coordination between the federation and provinces, and encourages private-sector involvement. He expressed confidence that effective implementation of the policy would result in a sustainable and balanced wheat market, benefiting farmers, consumers, and the national economy. – ERMD
