Samsung Electronics has revealed new details about its upcoming AI-powered smart glasses, highlighting improved battery life, durability and enhanced privacy features as it prepares to launch the device later this year.
Developed in collaboration with Google, Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, the smart glasses will focus initially on voice interactions powered by Google’s Gemini AI assistant. Samsung has not yet disclosed the product’s name, price or release date but said the device will integrate with its wider ecosystem of smartphones, smartwatches and other connected products.
Addressing growing concerns over privacy, Samsung said the glasses will stop recording if the LED indicator used to signal filming is covered or obstructed. The company also pledged not to use customers’ audio, video or screen-sharing data from the device to train artificial intelligence models. Samsung executives said transparency, user control and safeguards against misuse would be key to building consumer trust.
The company said the glasses feature custom-designed components, including reinforced hinges and temples built to withstand regular wear and tear. Samsung claims the device can deliver up to nine hours of heavy use on a single charge while maintaining a lightweight, balanced design that prevents heat buildup on the user’s face. The glasses have also undergone testing for resistance to water, heat, humidity, sweat and sunscreen.
Samsung plans to introduce display-equipped smart glasses in a later phase, subject to meeting its performance standards. The company said it has filed more than 200 patents related to smart glasses technology, with only a fraction of those innovations incorporated into the first-generation product.
The announcement comes as demand for smart glasses continues to grow, with industry research showing global shipments of display-free smart glasses rose sharply in the first quarter, intensifying competition in the emerging wearable AI market. – ERMD
