Pakistan Seeks Expanded Canadian Support to Modernize Agriculture

Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain stressed Pakistan’s need to resolve market access issues to ensure uninterrupted imports of canola—Pakistan’s major agricultural import from Canada. He emphasized the importance of predictable, efficient certification and registration processes and sought Canada’s support in facilitating timely trade flows. He noted Pakistan’s intention to expand its agricultural exports to Canada, particularly mangoes, rice, kinnow, dates, halal meat, gelatin, sheep casings, and processed poultry products, and requested CFIA’s cooperation in accelerating halal certification procedures.

The Minister also outlined Pakistan’s requirement for targeted Canadian technical assistance to modernize its agriculture sector. Key areas include embryo transfer technology, import risk assessment training, and the development of modern animal health information systems. He requested Canada’s continued support in finalizing Pakistan’s BSE negligible risk dossier and FMD control program—both essential for regaining access to high-value international markets. He reiterated that phytosanitary decisions must remain rooted in science, verified field assessments, and transparent risk evaluation.

The High Commissioner assured the Minister of Canada’s willingness to deepen technical cooperation and welcomed Pakistan’s ongoing engagement. He reaffirmed that Canada sees Pakistan as an important partner and remains committed to supporting Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen food security, upgrade agricultural systems, and enhance global trade competitiveness.

The Minister underscored Pakistan’s interest in accelerating technology transfer, livestock development, hybrid seed research, and farm mechanization with Canadian collaboration. Both sides agreed to pursue a forward-looking agricultural partnership. – ERMD
