Spotify to Label AI-Generated Artist Profiles for Greater Transparency

The world’s largest music streaming platform said the initiative is aimed at helping users distinguish between human artists and AI-generated identities. Songs from AI Persona profiles will not be included in Spotify’s recommended playlists unless listeners specifically opt to receive them.

Beginning August 11, artists will be able to identify their profiles as AI-generated. The labels are expected to start appearing on artist profiles from mid-September.

Spotify will also investigate profiles it believes represent photorealistic AI-generated identities that have not been voluntarily identified. Listeners will be able to report profiles they believe are AI-generated, while artists will have the opportunity to appeal if they are incorrectly labelled.

The company said listeners have expressed concerns about encountering artist profiles that appear to represent real people but are later revealed to be AI-generated.

The initiative focuses primarily on identifying the people or personas behind artist profiles rather than determining whether individual songs were created using AI. Spotify said AI use varies widely among musicians, but whether an artist profile represents a real human is a distinction it can help clarify.

The move follows growing debate in the music industry over the use of generative AI, which allows users to create professional-sounding music quickly. Last year, the emergence of the AI-generated band Velvet Sundown highlighted concerns over transparency after its music gained significant attention online.

Spotify has also introduced other AI-related features, including AI Credits, which allow artists to disclose how artificial intelligence was used in their music. – ERMD
