Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will supply Anthropic with tens of billions of dollars’ worth of artificial intelligence servers and invest up to $5 billion in the AI startup, deepening its presence in a market largely dominated by Nvidia.
Under the agreement announced on Wednesday, Anthropic will purchase up to two gigawatts of AMD’s next-generation Instinct MI450 AI chips beginning in the first half of 2027. AMD’s investment will be linked to the achievement of specific deployment milestones. The deal reflects a growing trend in the AI industry, where chipmakers invest in major customers to secure long-term partnerships.
Anthropic said the agreement would provide the computing capacity needed to expand its AI services, including its Claude models, which have seen strong enterprise adoption. The company has been actively increasing its access to computing resources, including a deal to lease the full capacity of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, housing more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs.
According to reports, Anthropic will deploy some of the AMD chips in its own data centres while accessing additional computing power through cloud providers and emerging AI cloud companies. AMD is also reportedly considering providing financial backing for Anthropic’s future data centre leasing commitments.
The announcement follows AMD’s multi-year agreement with OpenAI, unveiled last October, and comes as competition intensifies among AI infrastructure providers seeking to challenge Nvidia’s dominance. AMD shares rose 0.5 percent in early trading following the news. – ERMD
