The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Google LLC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting child online safety and responsible use of digital platforms across Pakistan.
According to a PTA press release, the partnership will focus on raising awareness and improving digital safety among children, parents, teachers and caregivers.
Under the agreement, the PTA and Google will collaborate on a Child Safety Program centered on awareness, education and capacity-building. The initiative will provide parents and teachers with practical tools and resources to help children use the internet safely.
Key activities will include developing online safety content in English and local languages, organizing training programs in educational institutions and launching a nationwide outreach campaign to provide millions of families with localized safety resources and tutorials.
Children can face a range of risks online, including exposure to sexual or violent material, age-inappropriate content, exploitation as content creators and inappropriate contact with adults. The new partnership seeks to strengthen the ability of families and educators to identify and address these risks.
The PTA previously worked with the National Commission on the Rights of Child (NCRC), UNICEF and Telenor Pakistan to launch a parental guide in February 2024 titled “Safeguarding Your Child in the Digital Age — Guide for Caregivers & Policy Brief on Child Online Protection.” The guide was designed to help caregivers better understand and respond to online risks faced by children. – ERMD
