Amazon Plans Massive Gas Power Plant to Supply New Texas Data Centres

The plant, known as GW Ranch, is being developed by Pacifico Energy in Pecos County. Previously filed permits indicate that the facility would have 35 gas turbines with a combined generating capacity of 7.65 gigawatts, making it larger than any gas-fired power plant currently operating in the United States.

The project was first reported by market intelligence firm Cleanview, which linked the power plant to three data-centre construction permits filed by Amazon. The facility could be permitted to emit more than 30 million metric tonnes of greenhouse gases annually, although actual emissions would depend on how frequently the plant operates.

Amazon said producing electricity on-site would allow it to cover the full cost of powering its operations without passing infrastructure costs on to Texas households. The company said the data-centre campus is designed to eventually connect to the wider electricity grid as interconnection capacity becomes available.

The company also said it is exploring the use of solar power and battery storage at the site and plans to use non-potable, brackish groundwater to reduce pressure on local water resources. Amazon reiterated its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 under the Climate Pledge.

The project reflects a broader trend among major technology companies to develop “behind-the-meter” power systems for data centres, allowing them to generate electricity independently of traditional grid infrastructure. Cleanview estimates that around 97 gigawatts of such projects are planned by major technology companies, including Meta, Microsoft and Oracle.

Energy analysts have warned that the expansion of gas-powered data centres could have significant environmental consequences. Natural gas produces fewer emissions than coal but still releases carbon dioxide, while gas production and use can also contribute to methane emissions. Gas plants can additionally release pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and fine particulate matter, which can affect air quality and public health.

The development highlights the growing challenge of meeting the enormous electricity requirements of AI while limiting the environmental impact of the technology boom.-ERMD/TX
