ChatGPT, Roblox Could Come Under EU's Digital Services Act -

ChatGPT and Roblox could soon be brought under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA) after both platforms surpassed the user threshold required for designation as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs), a European Commission spokesperson said on Thursday.

Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said the designation is “definitely possible” and could happen “sooner or later” after both services reported average monthly users in the European Union above the DSA threshold of 45 million.

If designated, ChatGPT and Roblox would be required to comply with stricter obligations under the DSA, including stronger measures to tackle illegal content and systemic risks, greater transparency in content moderation and recommendation systems, regular risk assessments, independent audits, and enhanced protections for users, particularly minors.

The Digital Services Act is one of the EU’s landmark digital regulations aimed at making online platforms more transparent and accountable. It imposes additional responsibilities on services considered to have a significant impact on the digital ecosystem due to their large user base.

The potential inclusion of ChatGPT reflects the European Union’s growing focus on regulating artificial intelligence-powered services alongside traditional social media and online platforms. Roblox, one of the world’s largest online gaming platforms, is also under scrutiny because of its extensive user-generated content and large global community, including millions of younger users.

No formal designation has been announced, but the European Commission said both platforms are eligible for consideration and will be assessed under the DSA framework.-ERMD/TS
