Meta has entered the growing market for AI-powered coding tools with the launch of a new application aimed at developers, as major technology companies compete to expand their AI businesses and generate revenue.
Called Muse Code, the tool is designed as an “agentic” coding system capable of handling complex software engineering tasks with large amounts of data. According to Meta, it can assist with planning, writing and validating code with limited human intervention.
Muse Code has been launched in beta, allowing developers to test the technology before a wider release. Meta also introduced Spark 1.2, an updated version of its flagship AI model first unveiled in April. The latest version is specifically focused on coding and is available through Muse Code and the company’s Meta Model API developer platform.
Meta has invested billions of dollars in artificial intelligence through its Meta Superintelligence Labs, as it seeks to compete with leading AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
The launch comes as the AI industry intensifies its focus on commercial applications. While consumer chatbots have attracted widespread attention since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022, businesses and software developers have increasingly shown a willingness to pay for AI tools that can automate coding and other professional tasks.
Major technology companies are also significantly increasing spending on AI infrastructure. Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta are collectively expected to invest about $700 billion this year in data centres, chips and computing infrastructure.
Meta’s move into AI coding comes as rival companies expand their own developer-focused products, highlighting the growing importance of software engineering tools in the competition to turn heavy AI investment into sustainable revenue. – ERMD
