Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has formally inaugurated Google’s office in Pakistan, describing the development as an important milestone in the country’s digital transformation and its growing partnership with the global technology company.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony in Islamabad, the prime minister congratulated Google’s team and Pakistan’s technology community, saying the new office would open new opportunities for cooperation in the digital sector and help empower Pakistani youth with modern technology and skills.
Welcoming a Google delegation led by Vice President Wilson L. White, Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan’s partnership with Google would continue to expand and contribute to one of the most important sectors of the modern economy.
White said Google had been investing in Pakistan for more than a decade and that the company’s goals were closely aligned with the prime minister’s ambition to develop Pakistan into a $30 billion IT export hub.
According to White, Google’s activities have contributed more than Rs3.9 trillion to economic activity for Pakistani businesses and households over the past decade and supported more than 960,000 jobs.
He said Google remained committed to supporting Pakistan’s IT ambitions through investment in local talent, digital infrastructure, hardware manufacturing and businesses. He stressed that successful digital transformation would require continued investment in human resources.
White said Google had already helped more than one million Pakistanis develop digital skills through career certificates and programmes involving schools and teachers.
As part of its latest initiative, Google announced that it would provide free one-year subscriptions to Google Gemini for students across Pakistan. The programme is intended to help students gain access to AI tools, develop modern digital skills and better prepare for the country’s growing digital economy.
The opening of Google’s Pakistan office marks a significant expansion of the company’s presence in the country and is expected to strengthen cooperation in areas including artificial intelligence, digital skills, education, technology and IT exports.-ERMD
