PAKISTAN – Agriculture

The Sindh government will launch a Rs 55.9 billion direct cash transfer subsidy program tomorrow (Sunday) aimed at supporting farmers and promoting wheat cultivation under the province’s long-term Agriculture Policy 2018–2030.
The program, themed “Direct Cash Transfer,” will be inaugurated at the Police Training Center in Larkana. The ceremony will be hosted by the Agriculture Department, led by Provincial Minister Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mahar, while PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will attend as the chief guest.
According to Agriculture Department officials, the subsidy — one of the largest ever introduced in Sindh — will provide direct financial assistance to farmers through Sindh Bank. The funds will help cultivators purchase DAP and urea fertilizers for the current wheat season.
Officials said the initiative is part of the PPP government’s broader vision to enhance agricultural productivity and rural prosperity. The program is directly linked to the Sindh Agriculture Policy 2018–2030, which emphasizes food security, farmer welfare, and sustainable growth in the agriculture sector.
Sources added that the PPP leadership’s manifesto, based on the slogan “Hari Khushal, Sindh Khushal,” envisions agriculture as the backbone of Sindh’s economic and social development.
Despite the program’s scope and urgency, Agriculture Department sources acknowledged ongoing verification challenges from the Revenue Department, which have slowed the confirmation of land records and farmer accounts. Officials said efforts are underway to resolve these administrative hurdles to ensure smooth implementation.
Secretary Agriculture Muhammad Zaman Narejo said the initiative reflects the PPP’s commitment to an “agricultural revolution” in Sindh, calling it a “timely and people-friendly measure.” Director General Agriculture Extension Allahwarayo Rind described it as a “major step” that will provide meaningful support to farmers across the province.
The Sindh government hopes the program will mark a new phase of agricultural reform, aligning financial assistance, technology, and farmer empowerment to create a more productive and prosperous rural economy.
