South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix is considering building a large-scale memory chip manufacturing plant in Japan’s Miyagi prefecture, with potential investment reaching tens of trillions of won, according to a report by South Korea’s Hankyoreh newspaper.
The proposed investment would be aimed at expanding SK Hynix’s production capacity as global demand for memory chips continues to grow. Miyagi, in northeastern Japan, is one of the country’s designated hubs for semiconductor-related industries.
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won recently visited the region, the newspaper reported, fueling speculation that the company is evaluating the area as a potential location for the new facility.
If approved, the project would represent the first major semiconductor manufacturing investment in Japan by a South Korean chipmaker, according to the report.
SK Hynix, however, said no final decision had been made regarding the investment or location. The company said that any site with the infrastructure needed for semiconductor manufacturing could potentially be considered.
The move comes as semiconductor companies worldwide seek to expand production and strengthen supply chains amid rising demand for memory chips, particularly from artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies. – TS/ERMD
