
Sindh Governor Nehal Hashmi inaugurated the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Laboratory at Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET), describing the facility as an important step toward advancing AI education, research, and innovation in Pakistan.
During the inauguration, Dr Muhammad Imran Saleem, Chairperson of the Department of Applied and Emerging Sciences, briefed the governor on the laboratory’s facilities, objectives, and long-term vision. Established with the support of the Zakir Ali Khan Foundation, the AI Lab is designed to equip students with cutting-edge technologies and practical skills needed to meet future industry demands.
SSUET Chancellor Muhammad Akbar Ali Khan said the laboratory will provide students and researchers with access to advanced computing infrastructure, machine learning tools, and collaborative workspaces, creating an environment that encourages innovation, creativity, and hands-on learning.
Dr Imran Saleem said the AI Lab will serve as a platform for collaboration between academia, industry, and government to address complex societal challenges through technological innovation. Research at the facility will focus on machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and data analytics to develop intelligent solutions and improve decision-making.
He added that the laboratory is expected to contribute to economic growth, enhance educational outcomes, and improve quality of life by promoting AI-driven research. The facility will also encourage entrepreneurship by supporting students and faculty in transforming research ideas into AI-based startups. – ERMD
