Court Orders Probe into Fatal Kotri Kabir Accident During Hearing on Poor Condition of National Highways in Sindh
During the hearing of a constitutional petition regarding the deteriorating condition of national highways in Sindh, the court ordered the Motorway Police to investigate the tragic traffic accident near Kotri Kabir in which five members of a single family lost their lives.
The court directed motorway authorities to identify those responsible for the accident and register a criminal case against them. It also instructed officials of the National Highway Authority (NHA) to ensure compensation is provided to the affected family.
During the proceedings, NHA officials informed the court that the 72-kilometre section of the N-5 Highway currently under construction would be completed by August 15.
Expressing dissatisfaction over delays in the project, the court observed that roads have, on occasion, been constructed overnight, questioning the prolonged timelines for critical infrastructure works. Justice Saleem Jessar remarked that delays in such projects often occur because budgets continue to increase over time.
He further noted that these roads primarily serve ordinary and low-income citizens, yet the projects continue for years without completion. Justice Jessar criticized the NHA’s planning, stating that proper road reconstruction requires completing one section before work begins on another.
“The NHA leaves one section unfinished and proceeds to break up another, without even providing an alternative route for commuters,” he observed, highlighting the inconvenience caused to the public. Following the hearing, the court adjourned the case until August 19. – ER Report
