Cabinet Approves National Agricultural Biotechnology Policy 2025

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research said the policy provides a comprehensive framework for the development, regulation, and commercialization of biotechnology products, enabling Pakistan to better utilize its scientific and research capabilities.

Under the policy, regulated areas include GMO development and commercialization, gene editing, the import and export of genetically modified products, and recombinant livestock vaccines, while non-regulated areas cover plant tissue culture and genomic research.

The policy was developed following directives from the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) and finalized after extensive consultations with provincial governments, experts, academia, and private-sector stakeholders.

Officials said the policy will help streamline biotechnology regulations, promote innovation, support sustainable agricultural growth, and enhance food and nutritional security across the country.-ERMD
