Pakistan Signs Key D-8 Protocol as Bloc Moves Toward Deeper Economic Integration

Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to regional economic cooperation as Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan signed the D-8 Protocol on Dispute Settlement Mechanism, a major development aimed at strengthening the institutional framework of the Developing-8 Organization. The signing took place during the 10th D-8 Summit, where member states reviewed progress on economic cooperation, trade facilitation, and long-term development goals.

The protocol is seen as a crucial step toward enhancing predictability, transparency, and trust among D-8 members. Officials noted that the mechanism will provide a structured process to resolve trade-related issues and support smoother economic engagement. The move coincides with the operationalisation of the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) among D-8 countries—an initiative expected to reduce tariffs, increase market access, and boost intra-bloc trade volumes.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Jam Kamal Khan said Pakistan was committed to working with member states to unlock the full potential of the D-8 framework. He emphasized that the combined impact of the PTA and the newly signed protocol would accelerate regional connectivity, support value-chain integration, and deepen economic ties across the Muslim world.

During the session, the minister also welcomed Azerbaijan as the 9th member of the D-8, marking the organisation’s first expansion since its founding in 1997. He expressed confidence that Azerbaijan’s inclusion—given its strategic geographic location, growing industrial capacity, and energy resources—would further enhance the bloc’s collective economic strength.

Leaders at the summit reiterated their resolve to promote cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, tourism, technology, and energy. They highlighted the need for digital transformation, supply-chain resilience, and enhanced private-sector engagement to meet the organisation’s Vision 2030 targets.

Pakistan’s delegation reaffirmed that the country will continue to play a constructive role in driving reforms, improving institutional mechanisms, and supporting initiatives aimed at building a more integrated and economically vibrant D-8 community. – ER News Desk
