Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed authorities to make the newly established national central data centre, Sky47, immediately available to all federal institutions as part of efforts to build a unified government data infrastructure and accelerate Pakistan’s digital transformation.
Chairing a review meeting on the implementation of the National Integrated Digital Policy Framework, the prime minister said a single public-sector data centre would serve as the central repository for government information, reducing duplication and preventing individual departments from establishing separate data centres. He said the move would help save national resources and improve coordination across public institutions.
Sky47 is Pakistan’s newly launched AI-ready national data centre and sovereign cloud platform. It provides secure local data storage, cloud computing and digital infrastructure designed to support government services, businesses and artificial intelligence applications while reducing reliance on foreign cloud providers.
The prime minister said the Pakistan Digital Authority was working to modernise government services and directed officials to prioritise the digitisation of key sectors, including health, agriculture, utilities, housing and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He added that the National Digital Vision would eventually allow citizens to access multiple public services—including document verification, banking, healthcare and financial transactions—through a single digital identity platform.
Sharif also directed that a meeting of the National Digital Commission be convened to engage provincial governments and other stakeholders on the policy’s implementation.
Officials informed the meeting that the commission had been established under the Digital Nation Pakistan Act 2025, with the prime minister as chairman and provincial chief ministers as members. They said digitisation work was progressing across priority sectors, while legal and institutional measures to implement the National Digital Vision were being finalised with input from international experts and global best practices.
The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal, Information Minister Shaza Fatima, State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmad and other senior officials. – ERMD
