Sindh Unveils Major Public Transport Expansion with EV Taxis and Electric Buses -

The Sindh government has approved a range of initiatives to strengthen and modernise the province’s public transport system, including the launch of an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service next month, the induction of 50 double-decker buses in Karachi in October, and the phased addition of 1,000 electric buses by the end of the year.

The decisions were made during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon.

The meeting reviewed the progress of ongoing transport projects and approved new routes under the People’s Bus Service, connecting Larkana with Qambar and Qambar with Shahdadkot to improve regional connectivity.

To ease traffic congestion during construction work, officials also decided to open a section of the mixed-traffic lane on Karachi’s University Road for motorists in September.

Sharjeel Inam Memon directed authorities to complete the depots for the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project within the stipulated timeframe and accelerate the rollout of the new intercity People’s Bus Service routes.

He announced that the EV taxi service is scheduled to begin operations in September 2026, while 50 double-decker buses are expected to arrive in Karachi the following month. The government also plans to induct an additional 1,000 electric buses in phases from the end of 2026 to expand the province’s eco-friendly public transport fleet.

The minister said the initiatives reflect the provincial government’s commitment to providing safe, reliable and environmentally sustainable transport while improving urban mobility and encouraging greater adoption of green transportation across Sindh. – ERMD
